06 / Frequently asked questions
Good questions. Clear answers.
What does last minute mean for flights, and are short-notice tickets really cheaper?
Last minute mainly describes a short gap between booking and departure; it does not automatically mean a special price. Airlines adjust fares according to demand, load factors, travel dates and remaining seats. A flight tomorrow can be cheaper when capacity is available, but fares on popular routes often rise near departure. Compare several dates, alternative airports and lengths of stay. Always distinguish a one-way fare from the total for a return trip. Include travel to the airport, baggage and any overnight stays in your budget. A good last-minute offer is one that suits your whole journey and is actually bookable, rather than simply the lowest number on an advertising card.
How do I choose a departure airport, and what do IATA codes mean?
An IATA code usually has three letters and identifies a specific airport or, sometimes, a city with several airports. FRA means Frankfurt am Main, whereas HHN means Frankfurt-Hahn; these are different places. Our map selection therefore uses specific airport codes. Start with your nearest airport, then consider other realistic options. Include driving time, parking, rail connections, baggage handling and the journey home. A night flight from a distant airport may become more expensive once taxis or a hotel are included. A city name in a flight search does not always identify one specific terminal. Check the airport codes for both your outbound and return flights before booking.
Are return tickets cheaper than two separate one-way flights?
There is no universal answer. Some return fares offer good value, while two one-way tickets may be cheaper on other routes. Compare the complete amount per person for the actual travel dates. Separate bookings with different providers may not include a protected connection. If the first flight is delayed, the second provider is not necessarily required to rebook you free of charge. Allow more time between separately booked flights and check whether you must collect and recheck baggage. For families, differing baggage allowances and seat charges can quickly change the apparent saving.
Which baggage rules and extra costs should I check before booking?
Never compare the base fare alone. Some low fares include only a small personal item, with larger cabin bags, checked baggage or a specific seat charged separately. Limits vary by airline, fare and route. Name corrections, seat selection, changes and payment terms may also affect the total, depending on the contract. Read the provider’s fare details before paying. On a return journey, check both flights; different airlines may apply different conditions. Children and special baggage may have additional rules. Only the total for all the services you need is a meaningful comparison.
Which entry documents do I need for a short-notice trip abroad?
Requirements depend mainly on nationality, destination, purpose, length of stay and any transit countries. Depending on the country, an identity card may be sufficient or a passport with a minimum remaining validity may be required. Visas, electronic authorisations, proof of onward or return travel and extra rules for minors may also apply. Check before buying your ticket and again shortly before departure. For German nationals, the German Federal Foreign Office’s travel and safety advice is a useful starting point. The destination country’s diplomatic missions provide authoritative information. Our country directory is a planning aid, not a guarantee that an individual traveller will be admitted.
Are map and calendar prices guaranteed to be bookable?
No. Displayed prices are indicative and may be based on observations, offers and availability that change between display and an actual search. A map does not necessarily include every fare or date. Open a current search for your dates and passenger count to see whether an offer is still available. Check the airline, airports, connection times and included services. Before completing a booking, the total, taxes, fees and selected extras should be clear. The booking provider’s offer is binding, rather than a previously displayed calendar amount.
How does booking through Search Last Minute Flights and FlyFinder work?
Search Last Minute Flights is a travel information and affiliate portal operated by UDL Intermedia Group. External travel providers supply the search and map tools. Search leads to further flight results and, where relevant, the actual booking provider. Search Last Minute Flights does not issue tickets or take payment for flights. The provider explains who your contract is with and the change, refund and cancellation conditions during booking. Keep your confirmation number and contact details. For problems with issued tickets, contact the organisation named in your booking confirmation.
How should I use the country information, and where can I find current travel advice?
The directory brings together reference information such as currencies, selected airports, IATA codes and practical flight-planning notes. Search by country or airport and expand the entries. Airport selections and other details have not yet been fully checked for many countries, so missing information is not invented. Entry and safety rules can change quickly and depend on nationality. Before travelling abroad, consult the linked German Federal Foreign Office information or the destination’s relevant authorities. This site’s travel notes do not confirm live visa rules or flight availability.
